If you go to the popular online video streaming site and search for “Steve Berry Volvo”, there will appear a show called “Big in the Nineties”. This is a shameless plug from me, because it’s my Volvo.. This came about via Paul aka Project Nigel in the Rover circles, looking for a standard car that people would have driven in the 90’s – none of the Lamborghini’s, Ferrari’s or Porsches – actually cars that everyday people had. This was to create a series with Steve Berry (ex Top Gear Presenter) and this got me thinking… whilst I was around in the 90’s, I wast old enough to remember the launch of the S70, and I was only 22 months old at the point in which my Rover 800 was registered. People and celebrities are making youtube, tik tok and other social media videos about the cars that people now collect and try to keep going, despite the ever dwindling parts bins available, and heavily relying on the salvage of the broken ones. When you look at the everyday cars of today, the Ford Focus’s, the Vauxhall Astra’s, Kia Cee’d’s, even my better half’s BMW 116d. None of these cars that I can see, in 30 years time someone is going to open a barn door and go “I remember when these were launched” or “these are cars to rescue”. They’re not as iconic as the cars we love and cherish today. The car scene is going electric (wrong direction if you ask me but that’s for a different day) and the only one that I can think of being an everyday car is the teslas – and before they’re dragged out of a barn they’re going to need a new battery – which we will have run out of Lithium by that point! it’s ok, there will be that many, parts will be plentiful.
Anyways, this week we’re at the Newton Town Show, and true to fashion this year we’ve forgotten something – only butter for the bacon butties so nothing too major! Last year it was raining sideways so it’s good to be here and sit outside the car! Next weekend Astle Park is on, unfortunately I will be in Blackpool for the weekend, Saturday a family BBQ and Sunday with the Manchester Volvo Group around Knott End. Then the prep work starts, the final Tatton Show of 2024 – I wonder if we can replicate last year’s Best Rover in Show Award…
Take Care all, and Happy Motoring!
